# Export a GIF for Slack

Make a looping GIF you can attach to a Slack conversation.

Start with your animation open and ffmpeg installed. GIF has a limited palette and on/off
transparency; a solid background avoids rough transparent edges.

1. Click **↓ export** beside the document's name in the rail (the Properties panel in After Effects or Figma). The **EXPORT** panel opens.
2. Click **GIF** under **Image**. The output filename changes to `.gif`.
3. Click **1×** under **Resolution**. You see the composition's pixel dimensions.
4. Click **Background: none** if shown. It changes to **Background: document**.
5. Click **Range: loop** if shown. It changes to **Range: entire animation**.
6. Click **Local drive**. You see the output filename and folder.
7. Click **Change output path…**. The full path becomes editable.
8. Type a path ending in `.gif`, then press `↵`. You see the chosen destination.
9. Click **Export file**. Progress appears; when it finishes, the panel shows the written size and filename. If the output exists, choose **Keep both** to retain the earlier export.
10. Attach the exported GIF in Slack. Open the attachment to check the loop and colours.

If the GIF is too large, shorten the animation or set a shorter loop with `b` and `n` on the
score (the timeline), then choose **Range: loop** and export again. The panel offers 1×, 2× and
3×; use the [CLI's `--scale`](https://terminal.lottiefiles.com/docs/cli.md#export) for a smaller delivery size.
