# Presets from a plugin

## Step by step

The small motions in an app say that something happened: a field shakes when a password is
wrong, a star beats when you favourite something, a toast rises in to say it's saved. In this
tutorial you'll install Micro-interactions, a plugin of eight such presets, and put three of them
on a sign-in screen at three moments. A plugin of presets has no commands: its presets join
**Apply preset**, beside your own.

### Before you start

- Creator Terminal, installed and open ([Install Creator Terminal](/install/)).
- How to install a plugin: [Install a plugin](/install-a-plugin/).
- The plugin, `micro-interactions.zip`, and the film's document, `app-screen.json`, from **Follow
along** on this page, in the same folder. Open the document.

### 1. Install the kit

Press `:`, type `Plugins` and press `⏎` (Return). On the Plugins page, click **Install from a
folder…** and choose `micro-interactions.zip`.

### 2. Eight presets

The line at the foot of the page says what it adds: eight presets, and no commands, so nothing in
it runs by itself. Press `⏎` to install it, then `esc` to go back to the editor.

![The line at the foot of the Plugins page: install micro-interactions 1.0.0? adds 8 presets.](https://terminal.lottiefiles.com/media/13.2-presets-from-a-plugin/9d75fec5375e/presets-from-a-plugin-the-line-at-the-foot-of-the-plugins.webp)

| Preset | What it does | For |
|---|---|---|
| **Tap** | dips to 92% and springs back | buttons, cards |
| **Shake no** | shakes side to side and settles | a wrong password, a refused action |
| **Beat** | two pulses, like a heartbeat | a like, a favourite, a new message |
| **Pop in** | grows past its size and settles, fading in | badges, icons, dots |
| **Toast in** | rises into place, fading in | toasts, snackbars, sheets |
| **Toast out** | drops and fades out | the same, going |
| **Nudge** | rocks a little and settles | a bell, an icon asking for attention |
| **Float** | rises and falls 10 pixels, looping | ambient motion |

### 3. Select the field and find the presets

Say the password is wrong. Click the password field on the stage to select it. Then press `:`,
type `preset` and press `⏎` to open **Apply preset**.

### 4. See the plugin's presets

The plugin's presets come first in the list, with its name, `micro-interactions`, beside each one,
before the starting points that come with Creator Terminal. A plugin's preset never replaces
yours or a built-in one: where the names match, it's listed with the plugin's name after it, as
**Pop in (micro-interactions)**.

### 5. Shake the field

Type `shake` to find **Shake no**, and press `⏎`. It's put on the selected layer from the
playhead, at 0 seconds here, and its keys appear on the field's row in the score (the timeline).
They're the layer's own keys now, to change like any others.

### 6. Beat the star

Click the ruler above the score at **1.5s**, click the star, and apply **Beat** the same way: `:`,
`preset`, `⏎`, then `beat` and `⏎`.

### 7. Bring in the toast

Click the ruler at **2.5s**, click the toast, and apply **Toast in**. It starts below its place and
transparent, so the toast disappears until 2.5 seconds, where it rises in.

### 8. Play it

Press `0`, then `space`. The field shakes its head, the star beats, and the toast rises in. Press
`space` to stop.

### What you learned

- A plugin can bring presets instead of commands. Its presets are in **Apply preset**, with its
name beside them, after your own and before the built-in ones.
- A preset goes on the selected layers from the playhead, as ordinary keys you can change.
- A number after a preset's name in **Apply preset** staggers it across several layers, frames
  apart ([Animation presets and stagger](/presets-stagger/)).

[Plugins](/docs/plugins/) in the manual says how a plugin's presets and themes are listed, and how
to make your own.

## In this lesson

### Install the kit (0:08)

Here's a sign-in screen, with nothing moving yet. This plugin brings presets, not commands. Install it as before. Open Plugins, click Install from a folder, and choose its zip.

### Eight presets (0:22)

The line at the bottom says it adds eight presets, and no commands, so nothing runs by itself.

### A wrong password (0:29)

Press Return to install it, then escape. Say the password is wrong. Click the field, press colon, type preset, and press Return.

### Its presets (0:39)

The plugin's presets come first, with its name beside each one.

### Shake no (0:44)

Type shake, and press Return. Shake no is on the field now.

### Beat (0:49)

Now the favourite. Click the ruler at one and a half seconds, click the star, and apply Beat the same way.

### Toast in (0:57)

And the toast. At two and a half seconds, click it, and apply Toast in.

### Play it (1:04)

Press zero, then space. The field shakes its head, the star beats, and the toast rises in.
